The Health Service is complacent and fatalistic about the physical needs of people with mental health problems or learning disabilities, according to an investigation by the Disability Rights Commission (DRC). Patients in this group are more likely to suffer from a range of illnesses and to die younger, yet they often receive worse care, it said.
The commission concluded that hundreds of thousands had poor access to treatments and information. Source - The Times & DRC. [19th September 2006]
- Certification of Doctors in the UK
Researchers at the British Medical Journal (BMJ) have completed a study that indicates British doctors should be certificated in order to improve the quality of healthcare in the UK. They have considered the scheme run in the USA where all doctors must update their certificate regularly and undergo training updates, reviews etc. The downside is that the costs would be passed on to the NHS. - 40,000 medication and prescription blunders every year
More than 40,000 medication errors are made in the NHS in a year. Most mistakes lead to no ill effects but it is thought that up to 2,000 cause moderate to severe harm to patients.
The figures have been collated by the National Patient Safety Agency and the statistics inevitably underestimate the problem to a degree since not all errors are reported [11th August 2006]
- Breast implants - operations on the increase in the UK
More than 26,000 breast implant (augmentation) operations were completed last year in the UK representing a 20% increase on the previous years figures. [14th July 2006]
